Frequently asked questions
Are autism assessments for children different from those for adults?
Autism assessments for children are very similar to those for adults, with the primary difference being that they are conducted in a multidisciplinary capacity. Typically, this involves collaboration with a speech and language therapist and/or an occupational therapist, depending on the needs of the individual.
As with adult assessments, we use the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule 2 (ADOS-2) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADI-R), as described previously. In addition to these tools, we take into consideration a school screening form if the child is attending school. For preschool-aged children, we may also seek information from a crèche or other caregivers to gather as much context as possible.
Our goal is to collect information from all relevant resources to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the child’s developmental profile and arrive at an accurate formulation.
What happens after my child receives an autism assessment?
After your child receives an autism assessment, the process of support is quite similar to that of adults. We offer guidance, support, and clarification about what the diagnosis means for your child and your family. Our aim is to connect you with the services available, both in the public and private systems, and to signpost you to the entitlements and supports that are available, depending on where you live.
As part of this process, we offer information on education, occupational support, and therapy options. Whether it’s through government-funded programs or private resources, we aim to ensure that you are aware of every option to support your child’s development and well-being.
As a mother of an autistic individual myself, I know firsthand how overwhelming this path can be. I am passionate about helping other parents navigate this journey, and I regularly share my insights and advice through my blog.
