Frequently asked questions

What does an ADHD diagnostic process for adults involve?

The ADHD diagnostic process for adults involves several steps to ensure a comprehensive and accurate assessment. At the beginning of the process, you will receive a few questionnaires via email, which we kindly ask you to complete and return. These questionnaires are an important part of the process and help gather relevant information.

As per best international guidelines, it’s crucial to obtain accurate collateral information from someone who knows you well from a young age, such as a caregiver or parent, if possible. According to DSM-5 criteria, symptoms of ADHD must have been present before the age of 12. This is why gathering information from your childhood, including school reports if available, is essential.

Depending on the specific case, we may also request additional cognitive testing or utilize QB testing, which is an objective test of attention. While QB testing can help with differential diagnosis, it is not used as a diagnostic screener for ADHD.

Throughout the process, we may ask for additional information such as school reports or any ADHD-specific details from your early life. This comprehensive approach ensures that we can make the most accurate diagnosis and provide the best support for you.

What do I do after being diagnosed with ADHD?

After receiving a diagnosis of ADHD, we provide neuro affirmative advice and guide you toward the appropriate support available. Depending on your individual needs, we can connect you with various resources, both private and public.

For instance, ADHD Ireland offers a range of support options, and we can also facilitate referrals to Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, ADHD coaches, or clinical psychologists. We provide ADHD-specific educational groups and practical support, such as OT-specific groups aimed at helping you manage day-to-day challenges.

As a consultant psychiatrist, I can also discuss the option of medication, as there are several licensed medications available to treat symptoms related to ADHD. These treatment options will be explored in detail during your post-diagnostic appointment, ensuring you have all the information you need to make an informed decision.

We also signpost you toward peer support groups, where you can connect with others who share similar experiences. Whether your focus is on improving your occupational, educational, or functional daily living, we take a holistic, trauma-informed, and trauma-aware approach to support you throughout your journey.

Our goal is to ensure that your needs are addressed with empathy and individualized care, so you feel empowered and supported moving forward.

I have one or more medical conditions. Does that mean I cannot take ADHD medication?

Having one or more medical conditions does not automatically mean that you cannot take ADHD-specific treatment. Each individual is seen with great care, and we take a very personalized and holistic approach to ensure that all factors are considered.

For example, having high blood pressure or other medical conditions is not necessarily a contraindication for ADHD medication. We will discuss any concerns you have in detail at your medical appointment. There’s no need to worry—we will carefully consider all aspects of your health in a person-centered way to determine if medication is a suitable option for you.

The decision to begin treatment for ADHD symptoms is an informed, joint decision between you and your healthcare provider. We take a multimodal approach to addressing difficulties around executive functioning, ensuring that any treatment plan is tailored to your individual needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Together, we will determine the best course of action for your care.
